- Purpose: Prevents the tongue from blocking the airway in unconscious, semiconscious, or, in some cases, conscious patients.
- Advantages: Better tolerated than oropharyngeal airways (OPAs), can be used with trismus (lockjaw) or facial trauma, and does not generally trigger a gag reflex.
- Insertion: Inserted through the nostril (preferably the right) with the beveled tip pointing toward the septum. Lubrication is essential to minimize trauma.
- Sizing: Measured by internal diameter (e.g., 6–8 mm) or the French (FR) scale, usually sized by matching the diameter of the patient’s nostril or the length from the tip of the nose to the earlobe.
